The husband says in the update that instead of selling the house, which his wife wanted, he and his ex-wife decided to legally give their son parts of their equity each year, staying below the annual tax exemption. The house will be his or almost his by the time their son turns 18. His wife was very angry about this plan, but he stuck to his guns and said that the house is a marital asset from his first marriage and should benefit their child from that marriage.
He also decided to split his share of the rent four ways so that all of the kids involved—his son, his stepkids, and the baby he and his wife are planning—can save for college. He told his wife they needed to get over the problem for the sake of their family, even though she wasn’t happy about it. She said she needed some time to accept it, but she agreed.
Update: AITAH for refusing to sell the house my wife wants me to sell?
