Have you ever wondered what words you’d utter if given one last chance to reveal the truth, even from a hospital bed? On Super Bowl Sunday, February 9, 2025, 22-year-old Daniel Waterman of Liverpool, New York, dreamed of a fun night with friends in Flagler County, Florida.

Instead, the roar of the game turned into the screech of tires as his girlfriend, 24-year-old Leigha Mumby, veered off Interstate 95 and slammed into a tree. What began as an argument in earnest ended in a crash that altered lives forever.

Daniel’s injuries were horrific: a broken neck, back, and collarbone in three spots, his hips dislocated, leg and ankle fractured, and scratches everywhere.

He fell into a coma, and his family was left in anguish and uncertainty for months. Mumby, 24 and newly pregnant, claimed amnesia and walked away as whispers of intent hung heavy over her head.

As Daniel awoke in May, barely, he mustered enough strength to tell investigators, his voice failing but fortitude intact; she swerved on purpose.

After discovering her pregnancy and seeing a text from his female friend, she told me, ‘I don’t care what happens. You will get it.’ The vehicle data corroborated his story and revealed the actions of a furious woman driving with lethal abandon that no one could ignore.

The argument simmered all day and was fueled by Daniel’s anxiety about fatherhood and Mumby’s jealousy over a chaste message. Friends of the couple remembered the tension and the early exit from a Super Bowl watch party.

One chilling phone call to a relative captured Mumby’s emotion as she grabbed his device and uttered words that would announce her guilt. Prosecutors wasted little time, charging Mumby in July with reckless driving causing serious injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

She pleaded not guilty, received bond, and life stopped, inexplicably unnerved. Yet Daniel fought on, through surgeries and therapy, his spirit intact regardless of the agony that gripped every movement.

For eight long months, Daniel sobbed ceaselessly as those around him declined to do so. “He never quit – the entire time he didn’t quit,” says mom Heather.

On October 8, pneumonia finally stole him away this time, converting a survivor account to one of loss. It was like one additional crushing tragedy.

Michael Gilman grieved for his grandson, who had suddenly lost a future of fatherhood, ambition, and pleasure. “He devastated everything,” he declares, his voice heavy with sorrow, underscoring the horror of the crash.

On October 27, swift retribution arrived when Mumby got hit with a second-degree felony and manslaughter, carrying up to 15 years in prison.

She was apprehended two days following $150,000 bond, then freed before an arraignment. “They’re grateful the State Attorney’s office allowed hearing Daniel’s voice,” explains family lawyer John Hager, his eyes brimming with fury.

The quality encoder memorializes this testimony as the key to the case. Hager will be with them, a warrant to multiply their absurdity in court.

Since then, the woman delivered, and Mumby is being held accountable, the focus is on who is to accede liability for a life because of: The GoFundMe effort has raised a considerable amount, assisting in easing mounds of medical invoices that linger as unopened wounds.

The kindness of people is granted, and Daniel’s dedication and the unadorned unfairness of all hit home and warmed my broken heart. It serves as a testament to the community spirit, reminding us that tales can bring us all together.

The pair were once involved in a meaningful connection. In the end, though, Daniel’s acerbic final words are a reminder of what happens in dangerous interactions. His love word will serve as a plea for vigilance, as will the judge’s determination.

Can the wounds be healed by justice, or just take place? The quality encoded awaits the summer in question, his heart heavy with secured optimism.
