You’re not the asshole. You were a grieving 16-year-old in mourning for his mother when your dad remarried, and you should not have been expected to “make a ‘grand gesture’ of love or acceptance,” as the new wife had wished for. You were still graceful in the way that you didn’t pitch a fit and made your dad feel good on his rough day. Her assumption that you should have shown happiness and affection toward her as “the new mother figure” in the family was entirely of her imagining — one you were never informed about nor agreed to fulfill.
Years after the fact, her refusing to let it go and insisting that you apologize about something you never led her to expect in the first place is unfair and emotionally manipulative. You haven’t disrespected her or the marriage; you’ve made space for healthy boundaries while attending to your loss. Her bitterness comes from the fact that she had unrealistic expectations, not because you did anything wrong. You also were very mature in not having lied, and to have stood your ground — you owe her absolutely no apology for feelings SHE constructed herself!
