When Danielle got engaged, her aunt said she would pay for the wedding cake. She thought the wedding would be small and a long way off. The couple, however, recently decided to get married in three months and have a party for 200 people, mostly because the groom’s mother is very sick. The aunt was shocked to get quotes from bakeries that ranged from $1,800 to $2,200, which was way more than she could afford.
She suggested a fake display cake and custom sheet cakes from Sam’s Club for less than $400. She also offered to pay up to $800 toward whatever the couple needed most. Her niece didn’t take it well and said she was “ruining the wedding.” Danielle’s aunt’s sister called to say Danielle was having a breakdown. The aunt feels terrible, but she says she never promised an unlimited budget. She only said she would pay for the cake within reason. Now she’s not sure if she was right to not follow through on her first offer.
AITA for not living up to my promise?
