At a laid-back family lunch, the host used an online poll to invite her in-laws for pasta, garlic bread and salad served buffet style. Her sister-in-law, Marie had brought her 7-year-old son and he didn’t get served either because she was playing on her phone and the host assumed she would help him herself. When the host finally inquired if the boy needed any help, Marie said she should have served him like all others and made things “very weird.” The host said she was unaware of the child’s invitation requests and assumed Marie would, but Marie took umbrage and sent a text later to her brother, accusing the host of being “cold” and “not welcoming.”
Now the host is both hurt and irritated — she hadn’t meant to leave out the child, but also didn’t feel obligated to plate food for somebody else’s kid when everyone was serving themselves. She wonders if she’s overreacting to being upset about Marie’s outburst and public criticism.
