There’s something deeply satisfying about a home that’s clean and well-organized, where every single item feels right at home. If you’re anything like me, having clutter around makes it almost impossible to concentrate—especially when you know things aren’t exactly where they belong. Yes, that even includes the inside of the refrigerator.
Naturally, I didn’t always think this way. Back when I was younger, keeping things in order around the house wasn’t a priority. Looking back, I owe a lot to my mom—she somehow made our home look like it was always prepped for a magazine shoot.
She passed along plenty of practical knowledge too, especially when it came to making the most of those awkwardly placed little cabinets you often find sitting above the fridge. You know the ones I mean? If your kitchen has them too, read on to find out how to make them work for you.
At first glance, the mini cupboards perched above your fridge might seem kind of pointless.
They’re just too small for certain items, and stashing dishes or mugs up that high isn’t exactly ideal. So, what can you put in there?
Well, if you’re unsure how to put those upper cabinets to use, we’ve got some smart and creative suggestions for you.
Storage space for infrequently used kitchen gadgets:
Like we said, these overhead cabinets might not be perfect for items you reach for multiple times a day, but that doesn’t mean they’re useless. They’re actually great for stashing appliances you only bring out occasionally—think waffle irons, stand mixers, or that bulky food processor.

Canned products and baking essentials
Canned goods and pantry staples tend to last ages, so stashing them up high works even if they slip your mind for a bit. You could also store baking must-haves—like flour or sprinkles—that only come out for weekend projects.
Cookbooks
Have a stack of cookbooks you’d rather not leave scattered? I sure do—so I tuck mine neatly into that upper cabinet space above the fridge.
Pantry items and spices
Just like we mentioned with canned goods, you probably have pantry items that would fit well in that high-up space. You could also install a compact spice rack to stash your favorite seasonings up there.
Kitchen towels
Things like extra kitchen towels (my partner loves stocking up on them) can be neatly tucked away in that cabinet space.
Fine china
Have any dishware or silverware sets you only bring out for special gatherings? Storing them above the fridge might keep them out of everyday reach—especially from curious kids!
Be careful
This might seem obvious, but we’ll say it anyway: be cautious when reaching into or placing items in those cabinets. Don’t attempt to lift anything too bulky or heavy without good footing.
Always grab a reliable step stool or ladder when getting items in or out. Also, keep in mind that the warmth coming off the fridge can make this spot less than ideal for heat-sensitive items.
