Nicole Hall, a dedicated and loving mother, is on a mission to celebrate her daughter’s unique beauty and individuality. Her 13-month-old daughter, Winry, was born with a rare condition called congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), a distinctive birthmark that makes her truly one-of-a-kind. At first, Nicole and her husband were surprised by the appearance of the birthmark. Nicole recalled, “When they first handed her to me, I thought it was a bruise, but soon realized it wasn’t. It looked like a mole.”

Dr. Harper Price from Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Dr. Heather Etchevers from Marseille Medical Genetics explain that CMN can manifest as light brown to black patches, varying in both size and location on the body.

Instead of fixating on the initial surprise of her daughter’s condition, Nicole turned to social media to spread awareness about CMN and share an uplifting message: “Being unique is your strength.” Her goal is to inform those unfamiliar with such birthmarks while offering support and representation to families navigating similar experiences. Although Winry’s CMN diagnosis may raise her risk of melanoma, Nicole’s biggest worry is the possibility of bullying as her daughter matures. To protect Winry, Nicole takes proactive steps, like applying sunscreen, ensuring she wears protective hats, and scheduling routine dermatology check-ups as she grows older.

What truly sets Winry apart is her vibrant and glowing personality. Nicole portrays her as a lively, joyful baby, already showcasing her talkative nature and spirited demeanor. Her family expects to be kept on their toes by this cheerful and lovable little one. Nicole’s TikTok presence has attracted considerable attention, enabling her to connect with others who have similar experiences with CMN. This online network has become a crucial source of support and camaraderie, highlighting the significance of embracing individuality and celebrating diversity. Nicole emphasizes the importance of this platform, stating, “This is a vital discussion for parents to have with their kids—to demonstrate that differences are normal. It’s also for parents of children with birthmarks or conditions like Winry’s, to see their child reflected and understood.”

Nicole and Winry’s journey highlights a mother’s steadfast commitment to her daughter’s health and happiness, all while raising awareness and embracing the beauty of diversity.
