When Victoria arrived back at her grandfather’s house in Iowa, she immediately noticed his cherished sofa still occupying its usual spot in the living room. She took a seat, allowing herself a moment to reflect on her childhood, but then, without warning, it gave way with a loud crack. What she found inside changed her life forever.
Victoria’s mother, Ella, had left her when she was young and gone to New York with her lover, seeking an escape from their life of poverty. Victoria’s father, Edward, juggled a morning job as a delivery man and a night shift as a warehouse worker, but his earnings were never enough to cover the bills.
To make matters worse, Victoria’s grandfather Silas was in the final stages of his battle with cancer, and he was mostly consumed with his own suffering. Seeing no other way to escape her misery, Ella made the decision to leave Iowa behind, taking off to New York with her boyfriend.

Victoria noticed he was limping badly, prompting her to hurry over. “Sorry to bother you, I might need to call someone else.”
As she approached, he looked at her more closely. “Victoria? Is that really you?” he asked, astonished. “What brings you here?”
Victoria stared at him, confused, since she didn’t recognize him. “I’m sorry, do I know you?”

“Of course,” the man responded with a wide grin. “Do you remember us being friends when we were kids? It’s Tim!”
“Tim! I can’t believe I didn’t recognize you! You’ve changed so much! You were so round as a teenager, and now look at you!”
“Guess all that hard work does wonders,” he joked. “But what brings you here?”
“Well, that’s quite a story. Could you help me with the door first?” she asked. “Hand me the tools, and I’ll carry them,” she added, noticing his limp.
Using his tools, it took Timothy just five minutes to force the rusty door open. “Wow, looks like there are ghosts in there! So much dust and cobwebs! Let me help you clean up.”
Victoria tried to decline, insisting she’d handle the cleaning on her own, but Timothy convinced her. Together, it took them nearly three hours to dust every corner of the house. As they worked, Victoria shared how she had ended up in Iowa after her boyfriend and mother had left her.
Then it was time to tackle the cleaning of Silas’ sofa, which was covered with a dusty white sheet and layers of spiderwebs in the living room.

“You know, this sofa meant everything to Grandpa,” Victoria told Timothy, “and he treated it like it was his most prized possession. This old sofa, with its worn armrests, has lasted through three generations, and I hope it’ll make it to the fourth.” She gently rested her hand on her baby bump.
“But first, it needs a good cleaning,” Timothy replied. “Step back—you’ve already done enough cleaning today, and all this dust isn’t good for the baby.”
As Timothy worked on cleaning the sofa, Victoria kept sharing her memories. “I used to try jumping on it to see how the springs would hold up, but Grandpa would always shout, ‘Victoria! Get your skinny self off that couch!’ Oh, how I miss him!”
“Well, now that it’s clean, you can at least sit down and take a break,” Timothy said once he’d finished.
But as Victoria tried to sit, the sofa, dried out from years in an unheated house, let out an awful crunch. And as she shifted to get comfortable, it cracked loudly and split apart!

The sofa’s worn padding, which often leaked and crumbled, concealed a small chest hidden deep inside. When they opened it, they found gold ducats, fine jewelry, and a note addressed to Victoria.
“I hope this letter reaches you in good health, Victoria,” the note began. “I intended to give this to you earlier, but you were too young.”
“My grandfather entrusted me with this inheritance, asking me to pass it on to someone who truly needed it,” the note continued. “I believe you are the one who needs it most, knowing how poorly your mother treated you and how heartbroken you must have been when Edward left. I hope this brings you some help. With love, Silas.”
“Well, now that’s one incredible sofa!” Timothy remarked, scratching his head thoughtfully.
But Victoria couldn’t stop crying. Thanks to her grandfather, her life took a turn for the better after discovering the chest. She sold some of the treasures, using the funds to renovate her house and even build a new room for her baby.

Timothy stayed by her side through it all, helping with everything from finding carpenters for the house to taking her to appointments and visiting her on weekends so she never felt alone.
A few months later, Victoria gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Timothy was there to help care for the baby, and over time, they grew closer. Before long, Timothy proposed to Victoria, and she joyfully accepted.
At last, her family felt complete. She had a loving husband, a beautiful child, and their grandfather’s blessing, resting on the sofa she had inherited. Fortunately, that sofa played a crucial role, providing them with the stability to launch a small business with the savings they had made from selling the jewels.
