Liza sat in the living room, quietly listening as her son Artem arguing on the phone.

Lisa sat in the living room, hearing her son Artem argue on the phone. He was speaking loudly with a friend, and she couldn’t help but catch fragments of the conversation.

“Yeah, mom doesn’t get it!” he yelled, causing Lisa to flinch. “She never understood what I actually needed.”

Her heart tightened. She couldn’t fathom that her son, the one she had dedicated her life and work to, felt this way about her. When Artem slammed his door, tears filled Lisa’s eyes. She walked toward his room, wanting to say something, but paused at the doorframe.

On his desk was a note that read, “Mom, forgive me for everything…”

A cold shiver ran down Lisa’s spine. What did this note mean? In a panic, she grabbed her phone and began dialing Artem’s number, but she heard the soft click of the front door’s lock turning.

She hurried into the hallway and found Artem by the door. His face was strained, but his eyes betrayed uncertainty. He was holding a backpack, as though he was about to leave.

“Artem, wait,” Lisa said, her voice shaky. “Can you tell me what’s going on?”

He froze, his gaze avoiding hers, yet he remained still. Lisa took a careful step forward.

“I found your note,” she continued. “You have no idea how much it scared me.”

“Mom, it’s not what you think,” he replied quietly. “I just… I don’t know how to explain it all to you.”

Lisa saw his shoulders slump, and a heavy sense of concern washed over her. She took a steadying breath and spoke gently:

“Artem, you can tell me anything. No matter what’s happened, I’ll always be here for you.”

He finally looked up at her, his eyes filled with inner turmoil.

“I’m tired, Mom,” he sighed. “Tired of pretending to be what you want. I know you mean well, but I feel like I’m losing myself in the process.”

Lisa was shocked by his words. She hadn’t expected such raw honesty.

“Do you really think I want to change you?” she asked quietly.

“Sometimes it feels that way,” he replied. “I try to live up to your expectations, but it’s just too much.”

Lisa’s heart tightened. She suddenly understood that, despite her love and care, her son might have seen it as nothing more than pressure.

“Artem,” she said softly. “You mean more to me than any expectations. If I’ve made a mistake, I’m sorry. All I ever wanted was for you to be happy.”

Tears filled Artem’s eyes as he dropped his backpack and embraced his mother.

“I just wanted you to understand me,” he whispered.

“I will try,” Lisa responded, holding him close. “We’ll work through this together, Artem.”

This moment marked the start of a new chapter for both of them, one where they began to truly listen to and understand each other.
