Authorities have confirmed that legendary actor Gene Hackman has been discovered dead at his residence in Santa Fe.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza verified that Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found lifeless in their home. However, he did not disclose any details about the cause of death.
Mendoza stated that, at this time, there is no suspicion of foul play, and that their dog was also found deceased at the scene.
When asked by reporters about the potential time of death, Mendoza refrained from offering any comments.
He released a statement saying: “All I can confirm is that we are conducting an initial investigation into the deaths and are awaiting approval for a search warrant.”

Hackman was celebrated as a Hollywood icon, particularly admired for his portrayal of Lex Luthor in the Superman film, as well as his roles as Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven and Jimmy Doyle in The French Connection.
The actor was also known for his reclusive nature, and in 2004, he revealed his decision to retire from acting. He left Los Angeles behind and relocated to New Mexico.
He shared with the media at the time: “I didn’t hold a press conference to announce my retirement, but yes, I’m done with acting. I truly have no desire to continue.”
Hackman wrapped up his acting career with more than 100 roles, though rumors suggested that stress influenced his decision to retire.
He and Betsy began their relationship in the mid-1980s and tied the knot in 1991. However, Hackman made it clear that he did not leave his first wife, Faye Maltese, for Betsy.
He explained: “Just to clarify, I didn’t leave my real-life wife for a younger woman. We simply grew apart. We lost our connection. In this line of work, marriage requires a lot of effort and love.”
