Expert Issues Warning About Risky Sex Toy Mistake That Could Lead to an ER Visit

A single mistake could quickly turn a fun evening into an emergency room visit.

If you’re aiming to spice things up in the bedroom, it’s important to stay cautious, as even a tiny error could lead you straight to the ER.

While ER doctors have likely encountered a wide range of bizarre situations, certain cases still manage to stand out — like the time a person arrived with a World War I bomb stuck in their rectum.

That’s certainly not something you encounter often.

Surprisingly, it’s quite common for sex toys to end up in places they shouldn’t. In fact, a 2023 study revealed that they are responsible for an astounding 95 percent of sex-related ER visits.

If you want to avoid becoming part of that statistic, an expert has offered valuable tips on staying safe and preventing an embarrassing trip to the hospital.

Kate Shelor, an intimacy coach and hypnotherapist, emphasized that using poorly manufactured toys or neglecting proper cleaning can result in significant hygiene problems.

“Silicone, glass, and stainless steel items are durable and can last for years if cleaned properly. However, materials like jelly, TPE (thermoplastic elastomers), or lower-quality alternatives degrade faster and may trap bacteria,” she explained to the Daily Mail.

“If it starts to feel sticky, change in color, or develop an unusual odor even after cleaning, it’s time to get rid of it.”

She also warned, “While shopping online, you might come across extremely inexpensive products from certain overseas retailers, but be cautious—those materials may not be body-safe. And never use random objects—if it’s not specifically designed for internal use, it doesn’t belong there.”

Shelor highlighted the risks associated with using the wrong items for particular activities, especially when it comes to specific types of play.

“The most common mistake I see is people using items not intended for anal play,” she said. “It’s vital to use products specifically designed for that purpose. These will have a flanged base to ensure they can be removed safely.”

“Using an item that isn’t meant for anal play can lead to it getting stuck inside, which may require an emergency room visit—definitely not something anyone wants.”

Alicia Davis learned this lesson the hard way when a first date mishap resulted in an uncomfortable trip to the hospital.

Everything seemed to be going well between Davis and her date, and when the mood was right, they decided to head to the bedroom.

However, what was meant to be a memorable evening took an unexpected turn, as Davis later shared in a now-viral TikTok video detailing a rather awkward situation that quickly escalated into a medical emergency.

She explained that she had been using an anal plug, but things went awry.

In an interview with News.com.au, the 32-year-old recalled, “Out of nowhere, it felt like it had slipped out of place.”

After searching through the sheets and thoroughly checking the room, she couldn’t find the item anywhere.

“We stopped, and I reached down to check, only to realize it was missing,” she said. “We stripped the bed, moved the blankets and pillows, and even looked under the bed, but it was nowhere to be found.”

It turned out that the item hadn’t disappeared—it had become lodged inside her, which led to the inevitable: a trip to the emergency room.
