Doctor Reveals the Surprising Benefits of Showering at Night Instead of in the Morning

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who prefer a morning rinse, and those who opt for a shower before bed.

Personally, I fall into the nighttime camp—I love slipping under the covers feeling freshly washed, especially when I’ve got clean pajamas on and crisp sheets waiting for me.

At the end of the day, it’s all about what suits you best—but health experts have chimed in on this classic debate as well.

One such voice is Dr. Aragona Giuseppe, a general practitioner and medical advisor for Prescription Doctor, who recently shared his thoughts on the matter.

Discussing the benefits of morning showers, Dr. Giuseppe noted that many people favor them because they “stimulate the senses and help you feel refreshed and ready to take on the day.”

But that doesn’t necessarily make it the superior option.

In fact, Dr. Giuseppe appears to lean more toward the advantages of showering at night over first thing in the morning.

Some of the perks include helping you unwind before bed, easing tight shoulders from a long day at work or the gym, and rinsing off the dirt and grime you’ve picked up throughout the day.

Going into more detail, Dr. Giuseppe told Glamour UK: “The biggest benefit of evening showers is that throughout the day, your skin and hair can trap pollutants, allergens, and general filth—especially during warmer months when pollen, sweat, and chemical residue are higher.”

“So, if you skip a shower before bed, all of that ends up on your sheets—potentially leading to unclean bedding, nighttime allergy flare-ups, and skin irritation,” he explained. “This includes dryness, itchiness, and breakouts caused by dirt and oil from the day transferring to your pillowcases.”

In summary, Dr. Giuseppe supports nighttime showers as the better choice, as they promote hygiene and support restful sleep.

When it comes to how much time you should actually be in the shower (morning or night), skin specialist Emma Amoafo-Mensah advises keeping it under ten minutes.

“A lot of people are showering for too long—ideally, it should be less than ten minutes,” she shared with the Metro.

“Going beyond that can lead to dryness and irritation, particularly if you’re using very hot water and already have sensitive or dry skin.”

She also emphasized the importance of keeping the water temperature moderate, as overly hot showers can deplete the skin’s natural protective oils.

Enjoy those showers, everyone!
