Buddy’s journey is one of the most gut-wrenching yet inspiring stories you’ll ever hear. After suffering horrific burns and life-altering injuries, this brave dog began an incredible recovery—made possible by a team of compassionate veterinarians.
It’s hard to fathom the cruelty some people show toward innocent animals, especially dogs. Voiceless and vulnerable, they often endure pain at the hands of those meant to protect them.
That was tragically true for Buddy, a dog who experienced a brutal and senseless attack. His face was severely burned, yet despite the trauma, he’s made remarkable progress—thanks entirely to the tireless efforts of a devoted vet team.
In April 2021, the Tunica Humane Society revealed Buddy’s devastating condition. Described as a “happy and carefree dog” who “never posed a threat to anyone,” Buddy had been deliberately set on fire. He was discovered in an unthinkable state—his face scorched and blackened—and, horrifyingly, an extension cord had been knotted tightly around his neck.
As reported by WTVA, it was later discovered that a young child had admitted to the incident. However, due to being under the age of 12, the child could not be prosecuted under current legal statutes.
Buddy was taken in by the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi, where he began receiving medical care at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Bit by bit, Buddy began his long road to healing.
“Buddy’s vital signs are stable, but like any burn victim, this is just the beginning of a very steep climb,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, associate professor and veterinary surgeon, in an interview with WTVA.
“We’re making sure he’s at ease, regularly dressing his wounds, and addressing any issues as they come up.”
Even though his injuries seemed devastating, there was a hopeful sign—Buddy’s eyesight seemed unaffected. The Tunica Humane Society team confirmed his vision hadn’t suffered lasting harm. Though his eyelids required surgical repair, they were confident he’d regain full sight after recovery.
Back then, Buddy’s upper body remained mostly wrapped in bandages. Yet despite everything, he stayed incredibly resilient and in good spirits.
“He keeps making progress every single day,” the Humane Society wrote in a Facebook update. “He’s never let his doctors down. Everyone involved is thrilled with how well his skin grafts are taking. Healing from burn injuries takes time, but Buddy is truly thriving.”
“During today’s bandage change, we saw major improvement in the way his face is healing. While his recovery continues, he’s also starting to pick up some basic commands.”
“This gentle, loving dog didn’t deserve the horror he went through,” they added. “He never posed a danger to anyone. What was done to him was deeply cruel and intentional.”
“There’s hope that Buddy’s terrible injuries won’t be for nothing. That, somehow, something positive can rise from this heartbreak. That real change will happen, and justice will be delivered in cases like his.”
Since Buddy’s story first captured hearts across the globe, his recovery has steadily progressed, thanks to the devoted care of the veterinary team at Mississippi State.
He underwent multiple skin graft procedures to heal his burns, and as time went on, the need for bandages lessened. Slowly but surely, the light in his eyes began to return.
“Now that his ears are free from the bandages, he’s noticeably more cheerful and playful. You can tell he’s starting to feel real happiness again as his life slowly returns to normal,” the Tunica Humane Society shared last month.
Then, on August 7, they revealed a major breakthrough in Buddy’s recovery — calling it a “huge turning point.”
For the first time since the horrific attack, Buddy’s eye bandages were removed without the need for heavy sedation. It was a deeply emotional milestone — after over three months in darkness, Buddy could finally see the world again.
“His eyes were actually open, and he was very alert,” the organization shared. “In response to your countless prayers, YES, Buddy can still see.”
“Buddy’s last memory of sight was in the dreadful moments before a child set his face on fire. In the blink of an eye, this dog’s entire life was forever altered.”
Regaining his vision was a monumental step forward for Buddy, both physically and emotionally. The team caring for him noted that he began to show glimpses of his former self again—the kind, gentle dog he once was.
“Buddy’s entire demeanor has shifted since he saw the light of day,” Sandy Williams, director of the Tunica Humane Society, said in an interview with WREG.
“He’s joyful and playful, strolling the hospital halls with a huge ball in his mouth. He absolutely loves balls. He carries them everywhere so everyone can see.”
The group also shared an uplifting video of Buddy playing fetch, highlighting just how far he’s come.
While Buddy’s recovery is truly inspiring, he still has more healing to go. He hasn’t fully recovered yet, and his eyes will need continued medical care to keep them safe, according to updates from the Humane Society.
Because of the trauma Buddy has experienced, he will require long-term care, which future caregivers will need to be aware of.
“His skin will remain sensitive, his eyes will likely need eye drops, and he’ll need sunscreen when he’s outdoors,” Williams explained. “He won’t be a dog who can stay in the sun for long periods.”
It’s incredibly inspiring to witness Buddy’s transformation. After everything he’s endured, he’s beginning to embrace life once more. His recovery has been remarkable — a testament to the compassionate individuals who wouldn’t give up on him.
