Astronaut Who Lived 178 Days in Space Shares the Shocking Truth He Discovered After Seeing Earth

Astronaut Ron Garan Reveals the ‘Big Lie’ He Discovered After Experiencing the ‘Overview Effect’ in Space

An astronaut who spent 178 days beyond Earth has exposed the ‘big lie’ he uncovered while in space.

Ex-NASA astronaut Ron Garan logged 178 days in orbit, covering over 71 million miles across 2,842 trips around Earth.

In short, he’s spent plenty of time up there and has since reflected on one profound moment—when he gazed down at our planet, experiencing what’s called the ‘Overview Effect.’

The ‘Overview Effect’ occurs when astronauts witness Earth from space for the first time, altering their perception.

NASA describes this as an experience that ‘shift[s] […] the way astronauts view and think about our planet and life itself.’

Garan shared that, during this period, ‘certain truths become impossible to ignore.’

Speaking with Big Think, Garan explained: “We continue addressing issues like global warming, deforestation, and biodiversity loss as if they’re separate problems, but in reality, they’re just symptoms of a deeper issue—the fact that we don’t see ourselves as a planetary society.

“When I gazed out from the International Space Station, I witnessed paparazzi-like flashes from lightning storms, shimmering auroras that felt close enough to touch, and the astonishingly fragile layer of our planet’s atmosphere.”

“In that instant, a profound truth struck me.”

Garan suddenly realized that our entire planet—and all life within it—depends on a fragile, almost paper-thin layer for survival.

“I witnessed a glowing, vibrant biosphere brimming with life. What I didn’t see was an economy. Yet, because our human-made systems treat everything—including the very mechanisms that sustain life on Earth—as mere subsidiaries of the global economy, it becomes painfully clear from space that we are living an illusion,” he explained.

The astronaut describes the realization as a “light bulb moment” when he truly understood “how interconnected and interdependent we all are.”

Since coming back from space, Garan has remained dedicated to creating a cleaner, safer, and more harmonious world. He encourages a shift in perspective, stating, “We need to move from thinking: economy, society, planet—to planet, society, economy. That’s when we’ll advance in our evolutionary journey.”

He adds, “We won’t achieve peace on Earth until we acknowledge the fundamental truth of the interconnected nature of all reality.”
