Sarah was a young girl who had to spend the worst day of her life in a quiet town called Evergreen. She was only 17 years old when she gave birth to a baby boy.
Her boyfriend had fled on hearing of the pregnancy, leaving her alone and frightened. Sarah was trapped because she had no family to assist her and no money.
She wept over her little son in her arms in her last farewell. She uttered no more words than this and left him at the hospital, saying, “I am so sorry.”
The nurses assured him he would get a good home, and the heart of Sarah was shattered to pieces. She left feeling ashamed and sad and promised herself to begin again.
Years passed. Sarah became an adult, found a job as a cleaner in offices, and tried to forget about her past.
But in her heart, the regret never left her. She would always think about her son, how he looks, and whether he is happy.
Her baby was adopted by a kind nurse called Emily, who worked in the same hospital, but little did she know. Emily was a childless widow.
She called the boy Jack and brought him up as best she could with all the love in her heart. Emily took up overtime so that she could take Jack to good schools.
He was intelligent and diligent, which made him grow up and become a prosperous executive in a large organization known as Tech Innovations. Jack started the business from scratch and made it work, where ideas became reality.
Sarah is currently in her 40s and requires stable employment. She had applied at Tech Innovations as a janitor.
It was a modern office with glass walls and lots of people typing on computers. Sarah cleaned floors and trash cans at night, when the majority of the employees had left.
She did not know the boss, Jack, but she heard he was just and nice. Cleaning brought her peace, something to do so that she would forget her errors.
One evening of one day, she was wiping a desk, and she came across a photo of a young man with Emily. Her heart went a skip.
She had known Emily in the hospital days. Sarah shook her head, though, believing it a coincidence.
Emily was present in the office one day, visiting Jack. She was older and had gray hair and a kind smile.
She was in the lobby waiting to meet Sarah when she saw her sweeping the floor. Emily stared. “Sarah? You? Is that you?” she whispered.
Sarah stood stock-still, and her broom fell. The two ladies looked at one another, and remembering came.
Emily drew Sarah into a corner. I took your son on,” Emily said quietly. Jack is your boy. I raised him well, but now he knows that his mother left him at the hospital.”
The world went round to Sarah. She was shedding tears because she did not know that she was working with her son. This is my son, here? She gasped.
Emily nodded, and her expression was sad but determined. You should tell him who you are. So come along.” They went to the office of Jack, where he was in the process of concluding a meeting.
Jack turned his head up and was surprised to find his adoptive mother with a janitor. “Mom, what is this?” he asked.
Emily drew a long breath. Hello, this is Sarah, your biological mother, Jack.” It fell silent in the room.
Jack grew pale and then red with anger. “What? The lady who left me?” he shouted. Sarah came forward, and her voice shook. I am so, so sorry, Jack.
I was scared and young. I never ceased to think of you.” Jack got angry, and his eyes were filled. He recalled the tales that Emily told him about how his biological mother did not want him.
The hurt that he had pushed down inside of him burst out. You abandoned me like I was a nobody! And now you clean my floors when you work here? Get out! You’re fired!”
Sarah was shattered into pieces upon this reaction. She looked at the pain in his eyes, which she recalled in the hospital. “Oh, allow me to explain,” she pleaded, the tears falling.
But Jack turned and banged his fist on the desk. I do not want to hear it. Be off.” Emily attempted to cool him down, yet Jack was angry.
Sarah walked out with sobs shaking her shoulders. This is not how she had pictured finding her son. The remorse was more than before. What have I done? She mumbled to herself on the bus home.
Jack was sitting alone in the office, thinking furiously. He needed Emily as a real mother, and she had given him everything.
But to learn Sarah was so near, laboring at his elbow, gave the impression of betrayal. What could she appear to be now? He muttered.
Emily remained with her arms about him. Jack, she was only a kid. Her life was difficult. Wait on it.” But confusion and hurt were in the heart of Jack. He gaped at old pictures of his childhood and pondered the mother he never knew.
Weeks became days. Sarah was fired and could not get another one. She would cry at night, reliving the moment.
She felt she deserved this. She could not start thinking of Jack. She sent him a letter and told him her story, the fear, the loneliness, and the inexhaustible regret.
She finished, “I hope sometime you will forgive me.” She sent it to the office without looking to have an answer.
Jack got the letter and read it by himself. His eyes filled with tears when he heard of Sarah and her tender age and the fact that she was left by her boyfriend.
He finally looked at her as a frightened girl and not as a monster. The wrath subsided and was supplanted by melancholy. He discussed it with Emily, who gave more details.
She never forgot you, Jack. Once she returned to the hospital, it was too late.” Jack was sore at heart. He then understood how anger was hurting him.
It was a rainy evening when Jack knocked on the door of Sarah. She glanced at it with horror and saw him.
May we speak? Did he say it to her quietly? In her little living room, they talked. Sarah said again, in a broken voice.
Jack heard and said, “It is painful, but I would like to know.” They both wept, the feelings being raw and true. I did not find it easy, but it was a beginning.
Jack and Sarah had developed a tenuous relationship. He came to see her, and she met his family. Emily came to join them and filled in the gap.
Jack forgave, not completely at once, but to heal. Sarah had the consolation that her son had lived a good life.
She said, “And thanks to you, I have brought him up.” The three formed a strange family that was united by love and forgiveness.
Their story echoed through the town in Evergreen, one of mistakes, regret, and second chances.
Sarah got to understand that love can come even after years of suffering. Jack also found out that softened rage was comprehended. And at last, a mother’s remorse became a family’s hope.
